The Baggies end 2025 just five points worse off than they ended 2024, and yet the feelings amongst the fan base seem to be much worse, despite the fact that twelve months ago, Carlos Corberán had just walked out on the club and a replacement had yet to be appointed.
One notable point about the victory over QPR is that both of Albion’s goals came from set pieces which, with Diakité’s goal against Bristol City on Boxing Day, means that the Baggies’ last three have all come from set plays – they had scored only seven such goals all season prior to Christmas. Of course, there should have been a couple more goals, at least, in the second half as the hosts repeatedly caught Rangers in possession in their own half but failed to capitalise on some great positions, but scoring from set pieces is something Albion haven’t done enough of in recent seasons and we can only hope this is a sign of things to come.
Attention turns to Thursday’s trip to South Wales and a hope that Mason’s team can end their horrendous run of eight successive away defeats. No Albion side have lost nine away league games in a row since Don Howe’s team did so in 1972/73, a run that saw them relegated to Division Two. This season’s away record is the worst by a second tier Baggies team at this stage since 1995/96 when Alan Buckley’s side also lost eight away league games in succession.
